Summer in Northern Michigan is nothing short of idyllic. Having spent countless summers exploring this beautiful region, I'm excited to share some insider knowledge to help you experience Northern Michigan like a true local.

The Wagner Family's Summer Traditions

Our family's Northern Michigan summers have always been marked by simple yet unforgettable traditions. Our family has a deep obsession with all the happenings in Suttons Bay, our home “village”. The boys count down the days in the spring until they can jump into the bay at Suttons Bay Marina Park, roll in the sand, and jump off the play structure. I love to grab coffee from Hive before we hit the park because we like to head up the 9am beach crew. The boys will beg for ice cream lunch from Dalzell Dairy before we make our way back home and do it all again the next day.

Weekend farmers' markets are non-negotiable in our schedule, where we stock up on local strawberries, fresh corn, and beautiful bouquets. On a warm summer evening, you might find us riding bikes on the Leelanau Trail. We don’t usually get very far because the pull of jumping in Leo Creek usually stops us. After a busy day of work or play, we also love to stop at Hop Lot to grab a quick dinner and drink a beer while the kids play in the huge sandpit!

We also love to take a camping trip, even if it’s in our own backyard. At least once a year, we make our way to Leelanau State Park to visit the lighthouse, play on the playground, and eat s’mores under the stars. We often make a stop at Northport on the way home to grab some dinner at Fingers Crossed or Faro. It’s our own version of a Northern Michigan getaway where we live like tourists in our home county.

Local Secrets You Won't Find in Guidebooks

While the popular spots certainly deserve their fame, some of Northern Michigan's most magical experiences fly under the radar. Locals know to visit Peterson Park near Northport for the most spectacular sunset views without the crowds. For a peaceful morning swim, head to Good Harbor Bay early before the day-trippers arrive.

If you have little kids and want the big water views without the big water waves, head to Esch Road Beach. Otter Creek is a wide creek that flows from inland along the sand into the big lake. It’s the perfect place for children to splash in warmer, shallower, and wave-free water while the big kids and adults take on the Lake Michigan surf.

Nature lovers should explore the Clay Cliffs Natural Area for breathtaking views that rival Sleeping Bear Dunes but with a fraction of the visitors.

If you’re looking for a splash pad, skip Clinch Park (which is the busiest beach in the area) and head just south of town to the Blair Township Park and Splash Pad. Lots of space to run and play with more of a local crowd.
